I went on one of my Twitter rants yesterday, basically slandering the work ethics of up-coming/new/inexperienced rappers. I didn’t mean to offend anyone (although I know I did lol). It lead to a short conversation about “value” and what that really means to you. From an industry standpoint (more-so music producers), it means EVERYTHING. Of course this holds true in basically any industry, but the concept of “value” and being considered “valuable” is the lifeblood of today’s aspiring music entrepreneur community.

What is “value”?

What does value mean in a “music producer” or “rapper” context? Well, part of it is how good your music actually is. The starting point for all of us is our product. How good is it? Does our music sound polished? Is it original? Does it touch peoples’ emotions? These are factors we are in control of, based on how passionate we are and how much time we spend to perfect our crafts. When you inject true passion and honesty into your music, those emotions speak to people. Another factor (and probably the most important) that determines how valuable you are is your resume. Not that piece of paper, printed on extra durable, unicorn tail woven paper that you carry multiple copies of in your leather briefcase. I’m talking about your credentials. For us producers, that’s WHO WE’VE PRODUCED FOR, what awards we’ve been given, who we are associated with, and how visible we are in the marketplace (show/guest appearances, interviews, etc). The third (and least-obvious) factor that determines your value is time. Your value can grow, but only over time. Guys like DJ Premiere, Pete Rock, Dr. Dre, have been in the game for more than 20 years. They are in the elite, for life. You can’t EVER be placed in the same category as legends like them, until you’ve reached the accolades and accomplished as much as they have for 20 years or more.

How do I become “valuable”?

Two things that can absolutely set you apart from everyone else and increase your value: 1. Be incredible at what you do. 2. Be incredible with people. Let’s break these two things down, shall we?..

Be incredible at what you do - How do you become “incredible”? First of all, you’ve got to absolutely LOVE the music you make. If you “kind-of” enjoy making beats, then you’ll only be “kind-of” good at making them. Ask yourself why you decided to produce music. If the answer is “to make money”, then you are in the WRONG BUSINESS. I’m not saying there isn’t money to be made (duh!), but that type of motivation is not going to lead you to success. You’ve got to live and breathe music, and obsess over creating it with every free moment you have. It must be this way. There is no other way. Also, you’ve got to LISTEN TO MUSIC! Why create it, if you don’t treat yourself to music you can enjoy? Today’s best and most successful music producers have a wide range of musical tastes. It’s just the way it is. Listening to music is like watering a plant. It feeds your subconcious mind with musical wonder (we’ll talk about the “musical subconcious” later on). Those become tools for you when creating music. “Five beats a day for three summers/ I deserve to do these numbers!” - Kanye West

Be incredible with people - This one is my favorite, and the one most people DON’T think about. It’s actually a very simple concept. This entire industry is a “people industry”. We meet people everyday. People that want things from us. People that can and want to help us. Ask yourself these 2 questions; How often do I ask people for favors? How often do I give/help people? This industry isn’t always about getting what YOU want. You’ve got to find that balance. You want people to ask you for favors. Why? Because that’s letting you know that you are valuable. How often you fulfill those favors is entirely up to you. When someone asks you to do something for them, the ball is in YOUR court. Find value in that person to assess whether or not it is beneficial to you. On the other hand, if you are going to ask a favor from someone, be prepared to return that favor eventually. Being prepared to return that favor is based on how well you understand yourself and how valuable YOU truly are. If you find yourself always wanting things from people, asking for favors from people, all while never contributing back, STOP. You’ll never get call backs, and you’ll always be that “annoying worthless person”. Simple people skills are absolutely essential to this entire concept. Be confident. Don’t be an asshole. Be a master in our profession. Know when to speak up. “If you can’t explain it simply, you don’t understand it well enough.” - Albert Einstein. Know when to leave a conversation. Understand your boundaries. Don’t be awkward. Be charming. These are traits of successful people. Be like them, and you will eventually become them.

What are some things I probably SHOULDN’T do while networking?

Here’s a quick list of things to avoid, not do, do, and not be like..

Never approach someone while they are in mid conversation with someone else.

Know when to walk away. Don’t be a “lingerer” if you’ve already made your point.

CD’s are over. They are annoying to carry. If you are going to give them to someone of value, the least you can do is give it to them right before they leave.

Don’t start your conversations trying to sell yourself. Act normal. Ask questions. People love to talk about themselves, especially famous people.

Do your research about someone before you talk to them. The more you know about them, the more ammunition you’ve got for a conversation based on THEM. Start with them, then get to you. They’ll be more open to hearing about what you do after you’ve stroked their ego a little bit.

Never, EVER name drop.

ONLY name drop if you were asked to do so.

Understand your surroundings. The last person an artist wants to see as soon as they step off the stage is you, with a CD, trying to “network”.

Be presentable and carry yourself with confidence.

Always remember, the chances of doing business with someone you just met are based on these things; How valuable am I? Does this person know how valuable I am? Was I a pleasure to talk to? Do they know how to contact me?
